These lines represent the altitude (in meters) of various significant pressure levels. On any given constant pressure chart, the air pressure is the same at all locations. The 12z maps are produced at 13z using the 06z NAM 6-hour forecast as a first guess for the objective analysis. In most aspects of weather, observed values of pressure and temperature are not as important as the change in pressure or the change in temperature. In meteorology, we refer to the "change in" as a gradient. A sample 500 millibar upper air chart. The gradient is the largest where the brown lines are closest together.

The 500 millibar constant pressure charts is the mainstay of the upper air charts. If meteorologists could only look at one chart, the 500 mb level chart would, by far, be the top choice. Ranging in elevation from 16,000 feet (4,980 meters) to nearly 20,000 feet (6,000 meters) this is considered the "middle" of the atmosphere.

Open Waves. Whether longwave or shortwave, by far the most common pattern seen in upper air charts are just plain troughs and ridges. These waves and troughs are considered 'open' as, for the most part, there is no closed circulation associated with the waves.
